  5. The ToolBOX program provides an improved interface to DOS facilities.
  6. Applicable to the novice DOS user and to the power programmer, ToolBOX
  7. improves visibility to the file system and simplifies most DOS
  8. activities.  The many features of ToolBOX 1.4 include:
  9.  
  10.  * a full screen directory display, with user control of display format
  11.    and sort technique.
  12.  * point-and-shoot operations to initiate programs or directory changes.
  13.  * direct (pass through) execution of DOS command lines, including the
  14.    ability to reference files that have been selected within the
  15.    directory display.
  16.  * memory requirement that can be reduced to less than 2KB.
  17.  * multiple windows which provide simultaneous views of the directory
  18.    display and the DOS command output data.
  19.  * keyboard command stack of most recent command lines.  Commands can be
  20.    recalled for editing or reuse.
  21.  * stack of most recently entered directories.  A single keystroke can
  22.    be used to cycle through these directories.
  23.  * designated batch files invoked for files selected with specific match
  24.    strings.
  25.  
  26. Additional commands are available to provide help, delete files or
  27. directory branches, change number of screen lines, and much more.
  28. ToolBOX can be set up to display your GIF files, process your archive
  29. files, or start your word processor or spreadsheet application.  ToolBOX
  30. is not a replacement for DOS, but rather a tool that augments the normal
  31. DOS operations.

  33. Like most DOS shells, ToolBOX can be used to COPY and DELETE files, and
  34. generally assist in normal file operations.  ToolBOX's strength though
  35. is being able to go beyond what it is designed to do.  Rather than being
  36. a utility used to carry out a particular operation, ToolBOX can operate
  37. as a permanent shell through which all your DOS activities can be
  38. performed.

  40. Several other utility programs accompany the ToolBOX program, including 
  41. several that were not bundled with prior versions:
  42.  
  43.  TBOXCFG  With ToolBOX, virtually everything is configurable - the
  44.           colors, display formats, key bindings, and so on.  The TBOXCFG
  45.           program creates configuration files that are used by ToolBOX.
  46.  
  47.  BTSPATCH A utility to quickly set the default command line arguments
  48.           for all Binary Toolshed programs.
  49.  
  50.  TOASCII  Utility to convert text files that use the extended IBM PC
  51.           character set (such as The Binary Toolshed documents) to use
  52.           the standard 95 printable ASCII characters.
  53.  
  54.  TREE     Provides a graphic display of the directory tree structure.
  55.           The user can cursor through this structure to change director-
  56.           ies or examine file contents.
  57.  
  58.  VIEW     Text viewer, or browser, for displaying the contents of text
  59.           files.

  61.  DIRS     Ever need to know where all your disk space is allocated or
  62.           how much space is really being used by each of your
  63.           applications - then use DIRS.  It displays cumulative disk
  64.           space totals for a directory and all of its descendants.
  65.  
  66.  DRIVES   Do you always know which logical drives are assigned and the
  67.           space allocation on each.  If not, DRIVES can help.  It
  68.           displays disk drive parameters for all assigned drives
  69.           including drive types, volume names, capacities, and the
  70.           available free space.

  72.  MAKEBAT  Do you find it necessary to perform repetitive DOS operations
  73.           on multiple files within a directory.  Use MAKEBAT.  It can
  74.           eliminate the need to manually create such batch files.
  75.  
  76.  ONPATH   Need to know if a file is accessible on the DOS PATH, or which
  77.           one has precedence if multiple such files exist - ONPATH will
  78.           tell you.
  79.  
  80.  WI       A WHEREIS program.  Like most such programs, WI finds files
  81.           anywhere on the disk drive(s) that correspond to a match
  82.           specification.  WI, however, has a powerful additional feature
  83.           - it can perform any desired DOS operation on the selected
  84.           file(s).  You can copy it, delete it, view it, change
  85.           directories to it, start an application with it, or whatever.
  86.           And the match specification can involve file types, date
  87.           ranges, file sizes, or multiple file specifications (with
  88.           include or exclude lists).
